It isn't. It is a fundamental misunderstanding of why these systems worked in the Black Sea and why they will fail in the deep water of the Indo-Pacific.

I’ve watched defense procurement teams burn tens of millions trying to bolt artisanal battlefield hacks onto legacy military doctrine. Slagging off traditional shipbuilding while copying a localized tactical workaround isn't a strategy—it's desperation dressed up as innovation.


The Black Sea Myth vs. The Pacific Reality

The narrative is simple: cheap boat goes boom, giant warship sinks. Therefore, manufacture thousands of small kamikaze boats in the United States and ship them to Guam.

This ignores basic physics, oceanography, and geography.

1. Range and Sea State

The Black Sea is a pond compared to the Pacific Ocean. Ukrainian sea drones operated over hundreds of kilometers, often in relatively mild coastal sea states.

  • Fuel Density: Small craft running gasoline or small diesel engines cannot cross the thousands of nautical miles required for Pacific transit without motherships.
  • Hydrodynamics: A hull small enough to be cheap and stealthy gets battered to pieces in Sea State 5 conditions common across the Philippine Sea.

2. Comms Infrastructure

Ukraine's drones relied heavily on commercial satellite internet networks, low-altitude links, and near-shore relays. In a high-end conflict with a peer adversary, that bandwidth will be jammed, spoofed, or kinetically severed within hours.

If your cheap uncrewed boat loses its satellite feed 800 miles from mainland support, you haven't built an asymmetric weapon. You've built floating junk.


What Shipyards Actually Need to Build

Building Ukrainian-style suicide craft in US yards drags high-cost American labor into low-cost production races we cannot win. A U.S. shipyard using union labor and Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) compliant supply chains will turn a $250,000 Ukrainian hull into a $4 million military-standard acquisition nightmare.

If it floats on top of the water, radar, IR sensors, and satellite recon will locate it. True asymmetry requires going under the wave tops, where acoustic detection is vastly harder.
  2. Autonomous Range Extenders: Instead of small explosive boats, build autonomous uncrewed refueling and comms-relay barges that extend the legs of existing fleets.
  3. Modular Payload Cradles: Stop building single-use boats. Build standardized autonomous chassis that accept strike, recon, or electronic warfare modules depending on the operational need.

Dismantling the Common Myths

"Uncrewed surface vessels make traditional navies obsolete overnight."

No. They make unescorted, static, or poorly defended ships vulnerable in confined waters. Against an integrated carrier strike group with early warning airborne assets, layered defense networks, and active electronic warfare, small surface drones are target practice. They complement a fleet; they do not replace capital ships.

"We can produce these by the tens of thousands in months."

Only if you ignore the supply chain for military-grade explosives, secure encrypted communications, and battery systems. The bottleneck isn't molding a fiberglass hull; it's the specialized guidance components and hardened microchips required to survive hostile EW environments.

Importing Ukraine’s maritime drone concepts into U.S. shipyards is standard military bureaucrat behavior: fighting the last war’s tactical success instead of engineering the next war’s strategic advantage.

If American defense planners keep chasing the viral video weapons of today, they will deliver billions of dollars worth of short-range coastal boats to an ocean that demands long-range, deep-submersion endurance.
